Often these treatments are a matter of you trying them and seeing how they work for you. Psoriasis is not a one-size-fits-all condition and therefore neither is its treatment.

See Your Doctor

At the very first stages you should see your doctor, at the very least to get a proper diagnosis. Once you have been diagnosed they’ll probably give you a topical treatment to start. These are generally Vitamin D analogues or topical corticosteroids which are creams applied to the affected area. If this isn’t as effective as you would like them you could be referred to phototherapy – having your skin exposed to ultraviolet light. If this doesn’t offer enough relief then you could go for oral or injected medicines, but you would have to discuss this with your doctor and get their advice.

Change Your Diet

Many people have found that a change in diet can show a big improvement in their symptoms. Generally speaking this involves following a normal healthy, varied diet – with plenty of fruit and vegetables. If you are overweight then losing weight could also help to relieve symptoms.

Your Medicine Cabinet

There are different supplements that you can take which have been known to relieve symptoms. Often these are items you’ll already have in your medicine cabinet at home so are worth trying – fish oil, vitamin D, milk thistle and evening primrose oil have all been known to help. Some people have also found that fish oil applied directly to the skin offers some relief too.

Your Home

It can be a good idea to use a humidifier in your home to keep the air moist. Dry skin is the main symptom of psoriasis so if you can keep your skin moist then this can really help. You can usually buy these reasonably cheap and if you can only buy one just buy a portable one and move it around from room to room with you to help your symptoms as much as possible.
